Weight limit needed on traffic through Poynton

We the undersigned petition the council to impose a weight limit on traffic through Poynton. The Poynton Relief Road is now open, but some Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV’s) are still driving straight through the centre of Poynton, causing congestion, noise, dust and air pollution. We believe that there should be a ban on HGV’s (vehicles over 7.5 tons) driving into Poynton except for access.

The local Police have informed Poynton Town Council that they are willing to enforce a weight limit.

We note that in 2010, when the Alderley Edge Bypass was opened, Cheshire East imposed a 7.5 tons weight limit on traffic using the main road through Alderley Edge village. A similar situation now exists in Poynton, and a 7.5 tons weight limit should also be installed here.

Cheshire East must also ensure the updating of road signs to the north of Poynton on the A523 and A555 (within Stockport MBC) which continue to direct traffic for Macclesfield to go down London Road North (now the B5092) and through the centre of Poynton, rather than use the A555 and Poynton Relief Road. New signs should be funded as part of the Poynton Relief Road scheme.

We support the representations on the weight limit and road signs already made to Cheshire East by Poynton’s Councillors and Poynton Town Council and urge Cheshire East to take immediate action to resolve them.
