Appointment of Lay Members to Independent Appeal Panel for School Admissions

Meeting: 19/03/2013 - Lay Members Appointments Committee (Item 5)

5 Appointment of Lay Members to Independent Appeal Panel for School Admissions

To consider the appointment of an individual to become an independent appeal panel member for school admissions and exclusions.

Additional documents:

Minutes:

The Committee considered the appointment of an individual to become an independent appeal panel member for school admissions and exclusions.

Since 2012, the number of panel members had fallen by 3. There were currently 67 admission appeal panel members (34 lay and 33 education members) and 5 others (governors and head teachers) who sat on exclusion review panels.

The need for the applicant referred to in the Appendix to be appointed arose from the fact that the Council was extremely short of secondary head teachers for exclusion review panels. Such reviews required a lay chairman, governor and Head teacher. The applicant would also sit on admission appeal panels. It was not necessary to advertise on this occasion as the applicant had been contacted direct by officers. In accordance with normal practice, the applicant was not required to attend the Committee’s meeting.

All independent appeal panel members received training before taking part in hearings.

RESOLVED

That the individual referred to in the Appendix to the report be appointed as an independent appeal panel member for school admissions and exclusions.
