I have taken on the role of Mental Health Champion. I have experience in my former work roles as a Mental Health Champion and undertaken a number of courses to support me in this role. I am also a Dementia Ambassador and help to deliver several dementia groups for those living with the condition, as well as their carers.
In this role for the council, I see myself as promoting issues and service provision throughout the council’s work, knowing that including mental health issues can make all the difference for the organisation, our residents and our communities.
I wish to ensure that fellow councillors have greater awareness of mental health issues, so that they have information when formulating strategies.
I will also link in with the council staff mental health champions and visit mental health service being delivered across Cheshire East – such as crisis cafes, carers’ support groups and men’s mental health projects.
As well as gaining knowledge of the services commissioned by Cheshire East Council, community groups, charities and NHS, I wish to reduce stigma and fear of judgement and give a voice to those who may not normally speak up. If someone contacts me for help, I want to be able to support and sign post them to the services the council and its partners can offer.
