We the undersigned petition the council to develop a shared vision for the market.
The petition of residents of Cheshire East declares that Congleton Market, as one of the town’s most historic and valued community assets, deserves a bold programme of refurbishment inside and out, supported by active management and a forward-looking improvement plan that secures its long-term future as a thriving centre for local businesses and community life.
The petitioners therefore request that Cheshire East Council, who currently own and operate the market, to work with Congleton Town Council, traders and residents to develop a shared vision for the market; to commit to a forward-looking improvement plan; to actively promote the market to attract new traders and increase footfall; and to explore the potential transfer of market management to Congleton Town Council as a way to secure a stronger future for the market.
Congleton, as a historic market town, deserves a vibrant market
at the heart of its economy and identity because markets have
always been central to how the town grew, traded, and connected its
people. A thriving market supports local traders, farmers, and
independent businesses, keeping money circulating within the local
economy and reinforcing Congleton’s reputation for enterprise
and self-reliance. Beyond economics, a lively market creates a
social focal point: a place where residents meet, visitors are
drawn in, and the town’s character is expressed through local
produce, crafts, and culture. By animating the town centre,
increasing footfall, and strengthening pride of place, a strong
market helps Congleton remain distinctive, resilient, and rooted in
its heritage while adapting confidently to the future.
